Women in the church

Did some searching on the role of women in the church.
Upptill now I was convinced a woman cannot lead a church and doing so was not based on biblical grounds.
A discussion about this subject on a swedisch  blog centered on the understanding of the position of priest or bishop.
Those in favour of women as priests brushed this off. But my conviction was, to understand what the priest represents makes a difference.

Is the priest simply the leader, the teacher and shepherd of the church or is the priest also the representation of christ.

The way the position is understood opens or closes it for woman, or does it?
I tried to find out if my thoughts would lead somewhere in this.  Because none of those in favor of woman in the priesthood could give me strong arguments based on the bible I decided go find these arguments myself.

I knew they had to be there  because of this :
Two things kept nagging me. The word presbyteras in 1 thimothy 5:2 and the word kuria in  2 john1
What if the traditional understanding in this is wrong. It would be ironic.
Well here are two links, I found, defending a different understanding.

Who was the Chosen Lady in 2 John?

Now after reading these arguments I guess I am not so sure anymore. And another thought nags me, can the majority of the churches through time be wrong and now we have it right?
Was a high position for women so outlandish it got supressed or or do these two blogs look to much with our times glasses to the text of the bible.

We do have presbuteras and is it just older woman, but then why should presbyter be more than just older man.
It does seem though that elder is elder in spiritual way for was not thimothy young and yet he was to apoint elders?
We do have kuria and is it just lady, or more than just a lady but as in my lady a titel of honour.

No easy one this. But good arguments I thought these links offered, they could be right.

Now I have something to ponder about.

Still have to find out sources to help me understand the position of  the presbyter as in priests and bishops.

  1. It is good Elswintha that you do not accepting of everything propagated without seeking for God’s Truth first.

To save detail here I will give you a link to my Post about Woman in Leadership but to condense here, God does not contradict Himself and He makes it very clear in Scripture more than once that Woman are not to be in Authority over Men and Teach them in that role, which means they are not to be Ordained, they are to be under Man’s Authority in Marriage and in God’s Churches and since the early Christians met in their homes this includes House Churches.

Have you read Revelation12, Elswintha, John’s later letters like Revelation included the end times, when we ask for God’s wisdom and empowering and believe we have received them Jesus our only Teacher will lead us into all Truth and understanding even of Mysteries.

    1. Thanks for the link I have researched this quite a bit and came to the same conclusion.
My church does ordain women. And the links in this post give me enough reason to doubt my initial conclusion.
It has not been fully researched in the church on biblical gounds and I would like to understand if this understanding of the text could be right, whenever I think of opposing ordained women I feel these arguments are not met conclusively.
I read them before on a swedish blog and it keeps me wondering.

If God calls a woman and the bishop ordains her who am I to say I know better?

  2. As I shared before Elswintha God does not contradict His Truth in Scripture when Men or woman do this we reject what they propagate regardless of who they are or their position and title.

Jesus leads us into all Truth through the empowering of The Holy Spirit, we seek Him for our answers. 1Corinthians 2:9-16

John 16:13 -15. Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all Truth: for He shall not speak of Himself but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for He shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that He shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Matthew 23:8-10 But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in Heaven. And do not be called Teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. NKJV

1John 2:26-28 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any Man teach you but as the same anointing Teacheth you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie and even as it hath Taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is True, and we are in Him that is True, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the True God, and eternal life.

John 15:14-15 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.(KJV)

Psalm 32:8I will instruct you and teach you in the way you shall go. I will guide you with Mine eye.

Matthew 10:26-28 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops (KJV)

  3. Thank you for sharing Elswintha your heart response to God’s Truth, all His guidelines are for our protection, when we obey them we are Blessed.

Let’s pray together that those in darkness will see Jesus’ Light and so respond in obedience with heart conviction.

    Blessings – Anne.
